Housing Insecurity

Students experiencing housing and other basic needs insecurity face tremendous obstacles in pursuing and completing their degrees. Yet, the issue receives little attention partly due to a lack of data to meaningfully understand the scope of the problem or its impacts. OHE has conducted an initial analysis released in the report The Impact of Housing Insecurity on Educational Outcomes to explore this issue further. The report uses data from the Statewide Longitudinal Education Data System (SLEDS) to analyze postsecondary educational outcomes of students who experienced housing insecurity while in high school.

OHE is part of the Interagency Council to End Homelessness, a collaboration of 11 state agencies working together to prevent and end homelessness. As part of this effort, OHE administers the Emergency Assistance for Postsecondary Students grant program, which provides funding for selected institutions to offer cash assistance to students experiencing financial emergencies and other hardships.

Students experiencing housing insecurity or other basic needs insecurity can visit our Student Homelessness in Higher Education Resources page for information about relevant services.
